Two categories of material will be used to fabricate vacuum vessels
for the National Ignition Facility. The first category includes the
production of approximately 1200 short tons of plate with thickness
that range between 3/16 inch to 1 inch. The largest of these plates
has linear dimensions of approximately 360 inches by 140 inches. The
second category includes the production of approximately 48 plates with
a total weight of approximately 616 short tons with thickness that
range between 2 inches to 3 1/2 inches. The largest of these plates
has linear dimensions of approximately 372 inches by 108 inches. The
plate flatness required is one half commercial (i.e. one half allowed
in ASTM A 480). Chemical composition, mechanical property testing, and
ultrasonic examination of the plate material will be required in
accordance with ASTM Standards A 480, A 578, and A 240. Test
certification s shall be provided where applicable. Production of the
plates must not exceed five months after receipt of an order. The
supplier must be capable of storing or arranging for the storage of the
plates for up to six months. In addition, the supplier must be capable
of shipping specific plates from storage to fabricators with two weeks
notice. Prospective sources should have proper equipment and personnel
experienced in plate production of the material and sizes described
and capabilities in: 1) Ultrasonic examination; 2) Stainless steel weld
repair of surface defects; 3) Inspection of weld repair. Interested
firms should respond with a description of qualifications with respect
to the foregoing or related fields. No price or proposal information
is desired. Responses are required on or before December 18, 1996.

required information will not be considered for inclusion into any

accepted. This notice is to assist the University in determining the
potential for competition; no solicitation is currently available.
