The work includes the installation of two 5 ft. by 9 ft. (nominal
opening) high-pressure, bonneted, hydraulic, emergency gates in the
existing gate chamber of Abiquiu Dam. The gate chamber is located
approximately 270 ft. below the dam's Operations Bilding, with access
to the gate chamber by elevator, electric hoist. Demolition for the new
gates involves the removal of concrete up to 9 ft. thick and removal of
the existing hydraulic pressure unit. A new hydraulic pressure unit,
piping, and controls ar required to serve the new emergency gates and
the existing service gates. New gate position indicators will be
required for new and existing gates. Diversion of water will require
pumping reservoir water over the dam to the Rio Chama downstream. This
includes setting of two 6 ft. x 23 ft. steel bulkheads under 165 ft.
of water into the outlet conduit intake (by Government forces), and
construction of a 12 ft. dameter x 7 ft. thick concrete plug in the
conduit upstream of the gates under this contract. Approximately l,l50
ft. of 20 in. welded steel pipe will be constructed over the dam on
existing concrete pipe supports. Repair of the supports is required
along wth installation of pipe anchors. A concrete energy dissipator at
the pipe's outlet will be modified. A barge-mounted,
electrically-powered pumping system capable of discharging 50 to 59 cfs
is required. Barge construction requiremenmts include flow regulation
and monitoring, backflow control, office and sanitary facilities. Flow
from the barge will be conveyed in polyethylene pipes to the steel
pipe over th dam. Electric service for the pumps would be from a new
underground electric line (provided by others) buried in the dam crest
road. Backup diesel generator power for the pumping system will be
provided by the Government, with operation of the system by te
Contractor. Grading of the generator site along with provision of
diesel fuel tanks, containment, and piping is required under this
contract. Sitework includes temporary fencing, traffic control, and
barge rental. Magnitude of construction is between $5,000,000 and
$10,000,000. Invitation for Bid DACA47-97-B-0006 will be opened on or
about 10 March 1997. Plans and specifications will be available on or
aout 13 January 1997 at a total cost of $90.00 per set. This charge is
