NOAA; MASC Acquisition Management, Joyce.J.Mills@noaa.gov. The National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) intends to acquire a
HEAD/DISK Testing System (Spin-Stand) through the issuance of a request
for proposals. This instrument shall be capable of testing and
evaluation of magnetic recording media and the associated recording
heads. This consists of a electromechanical device to rotate the disk
and position the head appropriately and software which controls the
electromechanical device and performs industry standard analysis
routines on the data obtained. The electromechanical device shall have
repeatability of recording head positioning relative to the disk to
within 0.025 micrometers of a previously written track. It shall have
variable head skew angle which can be adjusted while remaining on
track. It shall have interchangeable head and disk fixturing and
programmable disk speeds of 200 RPM to 10,000 RPM. It shall have an
integrated spectrum analyzer, an integrated digital oscilloscope and
preamplifiers for current commercial and research head configurations.
The software is critical and shall provide head and head stack
certification, media certification, PRML channel support, error
analysis, and pulse shape analysis. The software shall allow
programming with a graphical interface all control parameters of the
electromechanical device. The instrument shall be widely accepted by
the magnetic recording industry as evidenced by positive
recommendations and appearance of data in refereed publications. All
interested parties please respond by 03/10/97. (0023) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0301 19970127\66-0004.SOL)
