This project proposes the construction of a new terrace structure for pedestrian access from the South Parking Lot to the second level of the Pentagon at Corridors 2 & 3. The terrace structure will be comprised of two bridges extending from the Pentagon into the South Parking Lot approximately 270 feet with a total width of approximately 450 feet from East to West. Construction will consist of two phases. Phase 1 will include the construction of the corridor 2 bridge (East) and the restoration of the loading dock. Phase 2 will be an option to complete the corridor 3 bridge (West) and the remainder of the loading dock. Located under each bridge will be offices and receiving areas related to loading dock functions that will be surrounded by the terrace (the loading dock). At the apex of each bridge there will be two elevators for handicapped accessibility as well as two staircases for vertical circulation and a drop off area for buses and cars. The bridges will be flanked on both sides and at each apex by landscape planters. There will also be a wall with canopies for shelter separating the Loading dock area from the pedestrian drop off area. The terrace walking surface will consist of a concrete paving system over a waterproofing membrane. The structure of the bridges will be clad in limestone to match the existing building in color and texture. The project will be phased to keep the existing loading dock operational during construction and to facilitate opening one of the bridges so that pedestrian access to the second level can be provided as soon as practical.
