A -- USAF WEAPONS RESPONSE TO THERMAL ENVIRONMENTS REPORT POC Susan Benik, Negotiator,(703) 325-6962, Edward L. Archer, Contracting Officer, (703) 325-5028. The effort objective is to produce a single, stand-alone, quantitative report that provides a consistent treatment of Air Force weapons and operations. The effort stems from the lack of a single report that addresses Pu dispersal risk from thermal abnormal environments for Air Force weapons. This effort supports the mission of providing DoD with quantified Pu dispersal risk. This report, which builds upon the work accomplished for the FRE study, will be available to the Air Force and DoD nuclear weapons community. The contemplated period of performance is 4 months. The Defense Special Weapons Agency (DSWA) plans to award a sole source purchase award to PLG, Incorporated under contract DNA001-92-C-0195. Under this contract, PLG was the FRE study integrator. PLG, Inc. developed accident scenario models and collected vast amounts of Air Force data on systems, facilities, and procedures. As a result, PLG completed a successful FRE study. The study was only quantitative to the point necessary to provide a relative baseline risk from which enhancements could be evaluated. A higher resolution temperature environment can easily be applied to the PLG models to provide stand-alone risk values. DSWA believes that PLG, Inc. posesses the expertise to provide the USAF Weapons Response to Thermal Environments Report. PLG, Inc. will be able to meet the requirements within the time required by DSWA and available funding.
