COATINGS AND SUBSTRATES -- The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) has
available for license a newly developed method for the quantitative
evaluation of adhesion between coatings and substrates (U.S. Patent
Number 5546797). The method is suitable for a wide range of materials
and coating thicknesses, from thin films to thick coatings, and is
capable of measuring interfacial shear strength as a position on the
sample. The test is based on constant depth scratching of the sample,
and any scratch-test equipment capable of operating in the
displacement-control mode may be adapted for it. A prototype along with
the associated analytical development necessary for the test are
available at NPS. Some refinement of the experimental and analytical
procedures is expected to be necessary prior to commercialization. The
School is looking for an industrial partner who is interested in
developing this technology through a Cooperative Research and
Development Agreement (CRADA), which provides significant incentives
for industrial concerns to work with the School to commercialize
technology developed by the Federal Government. If you are interested
