These are standard seismometers used by the USGS for volcano and earthquake monitoring and match several thousand seismometers the USGS presently own. The frequency response characteristics are well known. Standard volcano monitoring tools and software have been designed with the L-4 response in mind. The L-4 seismometer is an integral part of the instrumentation we use to forcast volcanic eruptions and untried instrumentation of different reliability could seriously affect time-critical decisions regarding aviation safety.
