support of NASA at the Kennedy Space Center, is seeking sources to
provide a Trailer Mounted High Pressure Breathing Air System Model
5407HBA-DT by Mako Breathing Air System or EQUAL. It must meet the
following specifications. The compressor package shall be trailer
mounted and designed to provide high pressure breathing air. The
complete unit shall be factory assembled and tested. All components
shall be housed within the confines of a sheet metal enclosure. All
instrumentation and controls (compressor, fill station, engine and/or
motor) shall be centrally located on the curbside of the trailer. The
breathing air system shall include the compressor, diesel engine,
purification system, DOT air storage system, SCBA/SCUBA fill station,
controls, interconnecting piping, wiring and highway trailer as
follows. The compressor block shall be four-stage, aircooled, pressure
oil lubricated of "v" configuration and rated for continuous duty at
6000 PSIG with a charging rate of 20.7 CFM. Compressor systems
requiring auxiliary cooling fans or cool down cycles shall be not
acceptable. An oil level sight glass shall be provided for checking the
crankcase oil level. An automatic drain system shall be supplied to
periodically discharge accumulated condensation during operation and
whenever the unit shuts down. The diesel engine shall be two cylinder,
watercooled, pressure lubricated engine rated for a minimum 20
horsepower at 2600 RPM and the v-belt drive shall be guarded to meet
OSHA requirements. The Purification System shall contain a visual
moisture and carbon monoxide indicators on the operations panel.
Systems requiring chamber depressurization to check filter condition
shall not be acceptable. The purification system shall process 57,400
CF before cartridge replacement. The air delivered shall meet CGA grade
"E" quality. The Control System shall be a unit to include all
necessary controls to monitor compressor performance. As a minimum, the
control system shall include the following -- high pressure switch with
engine shutdown and restart light in order to maintain proper system
pressure, high air temperature shutdown switch, and compressor low oil
pressure shutdown switch. The DOT Air Storage System -- The breathing
air storage system shall include four DOT air storage cylinders each
with a minimum capacity of 590 cubic feet of air at 6000 PSIG. The
system shall include all fittings, interconnecting piping, valves and
hardware necessary to operate as a cascade system. The SCBA/SCUBA Fill
Station shall be designed to permit the filling of two SCBA/SCUBA
cylinders simultaneously. Two 5000 PSIG fill hoses with SCBA and SCUBA
adapters shall be included. Wet filling capability is desired.
Instrumentation/Fill Control Panel -- All gauges, lights and indicators
shall be mounted on an operations panel readily accessible to the
operator. The control panel shall accommodate optional accessories at
a future date. The breathing air system control panel shall be
centrally located and designed toallow the operator to visually monitor
compressor performance, control air supply from the compressor and
storage and fill SCBA and SCUBA cylinders. As a minimum, the control
panel shall include the following compressor monitors: interstage and
final air pressure gauges, oil pressure gauge, keyed power selector
switch with panel illuminating power on light, hourmeter, high air
temperature shutdown light, low oil pressure shutdown light, and
compressor re-start warning light. The control panel shall also be
designed to control the air supply function. The panel shall allow
filling of two SCBA/SCUBA cylinders at a time and include a
self-relieving 0-6000 psi regulator and gauges to indicate incoming air
pressure, fill pressure, individual bottle pressure and two fill
control valves. The panel shall also include pressure gauges and flow
control vavles for two storage banks. Direct use of the compressor is
also desired. The trailer shall be a DOT approved dual axle trailer
with 14" wheels and designed for a minimum GVW of 7000 lbs. Vehicle
hook up and appropriate lights for highway use are required.
Accessories -- A sheet metal cabinet with vertically hinged doors and
angled sleeves shall be provided for curbside storage of six SCBA
cylinders, additional miscellaneous tool storage within the cabinet is
desired, a spare wheel and tire and a retractable tongue dolly wheel.
Carbon monixide monitoring system ounted on a centrally located
control panel, must have a warning light, shall reliably direct CO
concentrations from 0 to 50, and a calibration kit with 20 PPM co to be
provided. The Purification System designed to monitor the quality of
air being discharged is desired. Vendors who can meet these minimum
specifications should send technical literature supporting their
