USAFE Contracting Squadron/LGCZA, Rhine Ordnance Barracks, Kaiserslautern, Germany is conducting market research for the conversion of shelflist or collection of catalog cards for 12 libraries into U.S. Machine Readable Catalog (MARC) format. The libraries for which conversion will be performed are located in Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom and Turkey. The shelflists from each library will be shipped to the vendor, or imaged on-site by the vendor, for conversion to U.S. MARC and subsequently transferred to 1/4 inch data cartridge and read into the cataloging module of the Dynix Library Automated System, version 138E. Two cartirdges for each library's shelflist shall be created by the vendor. One cartridge shall be provided to the owning library, and one shall be sent to Dynix Nederland BV, Perkinsbaan1, 3439 ND Nieuwegein. Dynix Nederland maintains the automated union catalog of holdings of all United States Air Force Europe (USAFE) libraries. The vendor shall use a database, such as Online Computer Library Center, that complies to the Li brary of Congress standards. Each record in the shelflists shall be searched in the database for a matching "hit". Elements in the record which shall be matched are title, edition, publisher, imprint date, ISBN LC Number, etc. The matched record shall then be modified based on the library's specifications and added to the MARC records for a given library. If no match is found in the database, the vendor shall create a MARC record based on the bibliographic information on the catalog card being searched. The new record shall be consistant with the MARC format and current Anglo American Cataloging Rules, Second Addition (AARCR2). The serial format record shall be used for items in a series. Approximately 80 percent of the titles to be converted are standard monographs, 15 percent are audiovisual materials and sound recordings, and 5 percent are serials. USAFE libraries use the Dewey Decimal System and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Collections are 99.5 percent English language. Holdings include a pre existing barcode number, item type, media type, local notes, local call number, and price binding information.
