COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MARCH 5,1997 PSA#1795OCCUPANT DETECTION AND SENSING SYSTEM FOR AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT Sandia
National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, has developed the
Occupant Detection and Sensing System (SD-5843). The system was
designed to prevent passenger-side air bag deployment if the passenger
seat is empty or if it contains a rear-facing infant seat. The system
compares video images and range images of the seat with prestored
examples of the seat in known states. This passive video sensing and
associated algorithms have proven accurate for changing lighting
conditions, seat settings, and occupant positions. Sandia is making
this technology available to companies interested in further developing
and maturing this technology into a market-ready product. Licensees
should have demonstrated experience in dedicated microprocessor
programming and automotive interior packaging, image processing, and
software development. Licensees should also have a proven business
development skills and acumen, and possess the financial capability to
bring the technology to market. Successful licensees will, therefore,
have a proven track record of securing funding, assembling
multidisciplinary teams of scientists and engineers, and providing
management structure to these teams during development and marketing.
Successful licensees should also possess strong experience in patent
law and the legal protection of inventions and technology in the United
States and abroad. For further information, please respond by mail or
