Sozanski, 617/495-7376,, FAX 617/496-7692 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires the fabrication and assembly of one (1) Telescope Simulator Gimbal Assembly needed for the assembly, test, and calibration of a suite of focal plane instruments which are being built at SAO for the Multiple Mirror Telescope (MMT), located in Amado, Arizona. The Telescope Simulator Gimbal Assembly is designed to very closely match the interface between the MMT and these focal plane instruments. The Telescope Simulator Gimbal Assembly is comprised of a single large structure (approximately 91" OD, 65" ID, 24" deep) made from welded 1.5" thick carbon steel plate, and two trunnions or bearing supports which are to be bolted and pinned to opposite sides of the weldment on the 91' OD. The large weldment requires full penetration welds in all places, a post-weld heat treatment for stress relief, and many (approximately 300) tapped and through holes for mounting of other equipment. Each of the trunnions requires a precision machined surface for mounting of a spherical bearing (approximately 12" Bore Diameter). The Telescope Simulator Gimbal Assembly shall require machining of the instrument mounting surface after assembly of the two trunnions in order to provide a flat surface (to within .001") in the range of 70-80" diameter, final thickness of this surface is not critical. The primary concern is to receive a Telescope Simulator Gimbal Assembly with a flat mounting surface that remains flat over time.
