1ST ANNUAL NEXT GENERATION SPACE TELESCOPE (NGST) TECHNOLOGY CHALLENGE REVIEW NASA and the Goddard Space Flight Center invite industry, universities, national observatories, government laboratories and other qualified institutions to participate in the 1st Annual Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) Technology Challenge Review to be held at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD on July 7-10, 1997. NGST is one of the major missions comprising the Origins Program of the NASA Office of Space Science and is planned for a new start in the 2003/2004 time frame. It is envisioned to be a state-of-the-art infrared space telescope with a 4-8m diameter aperture. For further information, including a description of the current mission concepts, please see the NGST Homepage at http://ngst.gsfc.nasa.gov/. In the planning for NGST, NASA is seeking to aggressively promote the development and incorporation of new technologies which will enable NGST to deliver the maximum science return in a cost effective and timely manner. The objective of this review is to inform and advise the NGST Pre-Project and potential system contractors regarding existing, emerging and potentially feasible future technologies relevant to the design, development, launch and operation of large space telescope systems. Technical sessions will include the following areas: (1) Ultralightweight Mirror/Telescope Technology, (2) Science Instrument Technology, (3) Spacecraft Technology, and (4) Ground/Flight Operations Technology. Both oral and poster presentations are planned. Further information on the preliminary agenda and meeting logistics is available on the 1st Annual Next Generation Space Telescope Technology Challenge Review Homepage at http://ngst.gsfc.nasa.gov/~ngst/Hardware/meetings/techchal1.html. Because of space limitations total attendance and attendance from individual organizations may be limited and preference will be given to early respondents. Individuals and organizations responding to this announcement should indicate their desire to participate and provide a proposed title, a brief presentation abstract (less than or equal to 100 words) and indicate their preference for oral or poster presentation. Final selection of participants will be made by the Program Committee. The Program Committee may also elect to issue invitations separately from this solicitation. This opportunity does not include financial support. Participants are responsible for their own travel and lodging costs as well as a registration fee. Responses to this solicitation are due April 30, 1997 and will only be accepted electronically to the 1st Annual Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) Technology Challenge Review Homepage at http://ngst.gsfc.nasa.gov/~ngst/Hardware/meetings/techchal1.html. Participation will be confirmed no later than May 15, 1997. Further information on the final agenda, registration and final meeting logistics will be available at that time. Technical questions, or questions regarding proposed participation may be directed to the NGST Pre-Project Technologist, Dan Coulter electronically at daniel.r.coulter@jpl.nasa.gov or by phone at (818)-354-3638. Administrative information may be obtained from Mary Hurlbut electronically at mhurlbut@pop200.gsfc.nasa.gov or by phone at (301)-220-1701.
