Johnson Fax to 907/257-2492 This is a study of the Native history and
culture in the Bering Starits Region known as King Island and is
located midway between the Seward and Chukotka Peninsulas. King
Islanders are Inupiat and were able to revive the Wolf Dance in 1982
and 1991. This contract study will chronicle the Wolf Dance and assist
the King Island Native community in documenting and explaining this
ceremonial tradition. The deliverables will include ethnohistorical
report which places the Wolf Dance in context; public presentations to
general audience in Nome and Whitehorse within the Yukon Territory;
and a descriptive, overview of the Wolf Dance, complete with
illustrations and written for an audience of King Islanders and a
general reading audience. Must be able to translate, transcribe and
record any traditional King Island narratives and oral history about
the Wolf Dance. Must be a cultural anthropologist with references which
reflects experience in this field. Be able to consult and work directly
with King Island elders, knowledgeable Inupiat, leaders, and community
members to insure there widespread community support. The Ethical
conduct of the contractor will meet or exceed the principles of conduct
adopted by the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee, dated June
28, 1990. Will require audio-taping of all interviews, and must provide
