Robert J Mcneal, robert.mcneal@hq.nasa.gov. NASA RESEARCH ANNOUNCEMENT
NRA-97-MTPE-04 The National Aeronautics and Space Administration
(NASA) intends to solicit proposals for data analysis and theoretical
studies as an Investigator in the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite
(UARS) Program. The UARS is an operating satellite launched in 1991
with nine instruments designed to study the chemical composition,
dynamics and energy input in the region of the atmosphere from about 15
to 100 km altitude, which comprises the stratosphere, mesosphere, and
lower thermosphere. The satellite has considerably exceeded its
originally planned lifetime and is producing scientific data in an
extended operations mode. This extended lifetime makes possible
investigations bearing on trends and on processes with temporal
variations over periods longer than the originally planned lifetime of
18 months. This NRA solicits data analysis and theoretical proposals
in both the original areas of interest to the program and in the new
areas of interest now possible to study in extended lifetime. The UARS
is an operating satellite system. All data that it has acquired in the
past are available to the public. The data base is updated monthly with
the new data that are being acquired. All data analysis and theoretical
investigations that will be supported by NASA in the next three years
will be solicited and selected through this NRA. Current investigators
who wish to continue their science investigations with NASA support
must propose to do so in response to this NRA. Other interested parties
are also invited to propose. The NRA will be available electronically
on the release date, via the Internet at the Mission to Planet Earth
Home Page at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/mtpe/ under "MTPE Research
Announcements" or via anonymous ftp at ftp://ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/mtpe.
A paper copy will be available to those who do not have access to
Internet by calling (202) 358-3552 and leaving a voice mail message.
This announcement will be open for the period from April 15, 1997
through June 16, 1997. Proposals may be submitted at any time
throughout this period. See Numbered Note 26 regarding non-commercial
item procurement and Note B regarding the ombudsman. Any referenced
numbered notes can be viewed at the following URL:
