MILITARY APPLICATIONS OF MILLIMETER WAVE IMAGING Under the auspices of NATO's RSG.20, a millimeter wave imaging experiment (MIMEX) has been conducted. During the MIMEX trials, radar and radiometric imaging data has been collected on fixed high value targets, relocatable targets, and minefields. The radar data has been collected in L, C, X, Ka, and W bands; the radiometric data in Ka and W bands. The purpose of this data collection was to make available a common data base for the comparative development and evaluation of algorithms for:( a) Localization of, and aimpoint selection on, high value fixed targets; (b) Detection, recognition, target and aimpoint selection for relocatable targets; (c) Detection of minefields; (d) Modelling. RSG.20 is assembling a pool of field data for use by industry and other organizations. Supporting data will be comprised of detailed maps, aerial reconnaissance photographs, ground truth information, modelling data, and possibly satellite data. RSG.20 has selected four major target types for analysis: (a) Buried bunkers; (b) Buildings in urban areas; (c) Isolated buildings to represent a command post; (d) Relocatable targets. For the fixed targets, the primary goals of the analysis are to recognize the targets, to identify an aimpoint (selected in mission planning), and to determine the accuracy to which that aimpoint can be selected. The results should consist of the coordinates of the aimpoint, its errors (offset and CEP), and the parameters that contribute to these errors. For relocatable targets, the objective is to process the MIMEX data to establish the feasibility of: (a) Detection of relevant targets; (b) Identification of specific features; (c) Discrimination between targets; (d) Misindentification of targets; (e) Possible aimpoint selection. The only goal for minefields is their detection. For modelling, both validation of models and prediction of signatures are of interest. Any US industry or organizations interested in these data should express that interest to its National Representative on RSG.20. That person isMr. Bruce Wallace who is located at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), 2800 Powder Mill Road, Adelphi, MD 20783-1197; telephone 301-394-2610, e-mail: brucew@arl.mil. Industry and other organizations are requested to express their interest not later than May 15, 1997. There will be a meeting for industry and other organizations at ARL October 6-8, 1997. At this meeting details of the data collected will be presented. Any questions posed by those industry and other organizations attending will be answered to the extent possible. Data will be released only to those industry and other organizations who are in attendance at the October meeting.
