Dr. Jack Kaye, Jack.Kaye@hq.nasa.gov. The National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) intends to solicit research proposals for
science investigations to be carried out as part of the Atmospheric
Chemistry Modeling and Analysis Program (ACMAP) of the Science Division
of NASA's Office of Mission to Planet Earth. Proposals for membership
in a newly reconstituted science team for the Total Ozone Mapping
Spectrometer (TOMS) series of satellite instruments are also solicited
with this announcement. ACMAP supports research in computational
modeling and data analysis for studies on the trace constituent
distributions of the troposphere and stratosphere, as well as dynamical
properties of the stratosphere, emphasizing large regional and global
scales. Component parts of ACMAP include (1) Stratospheric Dynamics and
Related Data Analysis: (2) Atmospheric Chemistry Data Analysis; (3)
Aerosols, Stratospheric Clouds, and Radiation; (4) Multi- Dimensional
Atmospheric Modeling. New proposals, as well as renewal proposals for
expiring tasks, are desired for all of these areas, although the area
most likely to receive increased funding in response to this
solicitation is the use of atmospheric models to infer information
about production and destruction of chemically active trace
constituents at the Earth s surface. The TOMS science team will support
activities in seven areas: (1) validation, including limited field
observations to be done specifically for the purpose of validating data
products obtained by TOMS; (2) ozone trend studies, including
comparison with existing ground-based networks; (3) algorithm
improvement; (4) tropospheric aerosol studies (5) tropospheric ozone
data product generation and analysis; (6) surface ultraviolet radiation
studies and comparison with ground-based measurements; and (7)
applications, especially those for tropospheric meteorology, hazard
avoidance, and smoke/particle detection. This solicitation is open to
all categories of organizations, foreign and domestic. A copy of this
solicitation is available over the Internet via the Mission to Planet
Earth Home Page at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/mtpe under MTPE
Research Announcements or via anonymous ftp at
ftp.hq.nasa.gov/pub/mtpe. Paper copies of the NRA will be available to
those who do not have access to the Internet by calling (202) 358-3552
and leaving a voice mail message, including full name and address,
including zip code, and telephone number, including area code. This
announcement will be open for the period from May 16, 1997 through
August 15, 1997 and proposals may be submitted at any time throughout
that period. Letters of intent are requested but not required; such
letters should be submitted by June 27, 1997. SPONSOR: NASA
