A -- EXPERT SYSTEMS FOR SAFETY ANALYSIS SOL DTFFH61-97-R-00053 POC Jeffrey Thomas, Contracting Officer, (202) 366-4226 The purpose of this requirement is to develop two expert systems that focus on at grade intersections, located on two-lane paved rural roads. The first system, an Interactive Highway Safety Design Model(IHSDM), will be capable of identifying geometric deficiencies in proposed designs of the reconsturction of an at-grade intersection or new at-grade intersection located on two-lane paved rural roads. The IHSDM will also suggest possible improvements to correct any deficiencies identified. The second system will be a project development expert system. The project development expert system will be capable of estimating the probable causes of a safety problem for an existing at-grade intersection located on two-lane paved rural roads, guiding supplemental field data collection, and asisting the user in selectiing appropriate countermeasures. It is anticipated that a formal request for proposals (RFP)will be issued on or about May 20, 1997.
