A -- LICENSEE/DEVELOPER SOUGHT FOR NOVEL CHEMICALLY BONDED CERAMIC MATERIALS POC Point of Contact -- Ceramicrete Case Manager, Industrial Technology Development Center, Argonne National Laboratory, Building 900, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439-4832 Argonne National Laboratory, operated by the University of Chicago, Under contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, is seeking companies interested in developing commercial applications of a novel Argonne technology -- "Ceramicrete". Potential applications include immobilization of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials, wet or dry; and construction material products such as bricks, insulation and tiling. These novel chemically bonded ceramic materials form at room temperature and can incorporate substantial quantities of wide range of wastes such as ash or residues from wood and plastic production. The economics of the chemical components favor specialty applications, as opposed to large-scale substitutions for concrete. A special feature of the Ceramicrete process is the beneficial utilization of certain wastes that would otherwise have disposal costs associated with them. For hazardous waste disposal applications, Ceramicrete offers an economic, stable, leach-resistant alternative.Ceramicrete will immobilize higher waste levels than portland cement while maintaining good compressive strength, for example. Since Ceramicrete requires no firing, the energy requirements are low compared with vitrification. Heavy metals (including mercury) are stabilized and encapsulated in a dense ceramic matrix. This technology is protected by U.S. and foreign patents and patent applications. Argonne R&D is primarily focused on DOE hazardous waste applications. R&D funding for development of commercial applications is needed. Licenses are available for specific fields of use. Interested parties are invited to contact the Ceramicrete Case Manager, Industrial Technology Development Center, Argonne National Laboratory, Building 900, 9700 South Cass Avenue, Argonne, IL 60439-4832. Requests should include organization's interest in licensing and/or R&D collaboration. (0114)
