Room 4410, Washington, DC 20590 A -- IN-VEHICLE DISPLAY ICONS AND OTHER INFORMATION ELEMENTS SOL
DTFH61-97-R-00061 DUE 062797 POC James H. Mowery III, Negotiator,
telephone (202) 366-4244 FAXED AND TELEPHONED REQUESTS FOR THIS
SOLICITATION WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. INSTEAD, PLEASE REQUEST THE
SOLICITATION BY SENDING A HARD COPY LETTER AND TWO SELF-ADDRESSED
ADHESIVE LABELS TO THE NEGOTIATOR AT THE ADDRESS SHOWN ABOVE. Using
FULL AND OPEN COMPETITION, the Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA)plans to award a contract under which the contractor will perform
research and make recommendations for standardizing the manner in which
information is presented to drivers of automobiles through in-vehicle
information systems (IVIS), advanced traveler information systems
(ATIS), and intelligent vehicle transportation systems (ITS). New IVIS
require the development of guidelines for the information to be
presented to drivers. New and current symbols -- -both graphic and
textual -- -will be needed to meet the information requirements of
these new systems. Guidelines for the design of such new symbols, and
for when the symbols shall be used, will be necessary. Currently, there
is little standardization. Therefore, the contractor will review all
available information on current in-vehicle symbol usage; develop
candidate usage conventions for classes of information for both inside
and outside the vehicle,; incorporate the results into a preliminary
set of guidelines for the design and and use of in-vehicle symbols;
design and perform experimentation to select te appropriate symbols for
in-vehicle use; use the resulting data to write final guidelines for
in-vehicle symbol usage encompassing both present and future symbols;
and write both preliminary and empirically-based final guidelines. This
is a FULL AND OPEN COMPETITIVE PROCUREMENT. Therefore, all interested
sources may submit a proposal. Telephoned and faxed requests for the
solicitation will NOT be accepted. Instead, please request the
solicitation by sending, to the negotiator at the address shown above,
a HARD COPY of a request LETTER, with TWO SELF-ADDRESSED ADHESIVE
LABELS enclosed. (0122) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0003 19970506\A-0003.SOL)
