265-5111. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests
proposes to award a contract for professional archaeological services.
This position will provide support in archaeological survey, artifact
analysis, and other tasks involved in the management of heritage
resources on the Forest. The major duties of the incumbent that is
selected for this position will include but may not be limited to:
Participating in and perhaps leading inventories of Forest heritage
resources in areas of proposed Forest Service projects. Researching
reference materials for information pertinent to project areas. These
reference materials may include Forest files, maps, Heritage Resources
reports, professional archaeological reports, and historic documents.
Performing with or leading a crew in on-the-ground surveys for surface
and subsurface evidence of historic and prehistoric archaeological
remains. Incumbent will identify and record sites that are discovered
during the surveys. Participating in Phase II evaluation excavations
and perhaps mitigation excavations if the necessity arises. Processing
artifacts that are collected during the surveys, evaluations, and/or
mitigation excavations. Preparing archaeological reconnaissance reports
and maps. Drafting maps and/or artifact drawings for inclusion in
archaeological reports. The position will be located at the Forest
