Officer, 919/541-0426 The National Institute of Environmental Health
Sciences intends to negotiate a contract with Howard University College
of Medicine, Washington D.C. to explore the genetics of hereditary
prostate cancer (HPC) in African-Americans for the National Human
Genome Research Institute. Howard University will serve as a
coordinating center and establish a subcontract with
recruitment/collection centers to ascertain HPC subjects from the
African-American community. The contractor shall establish standardized
criteria for collection of genetic, clinical and epidemiological data
on the study population; serve as the locus for receipt of samples from
off-site recruitment centers and establish a core facility for the
isolation, characterization and storage of cells and DNA for genomic
and biological studies. The contractor shall prepare DNA, process
samples for genotyping and provide quality control samples for
genotyping and forward them to the National Human Genome Research
Institute for analysis; establish and manage a steering committee for
the study and arrange yearly meetings of the committee. It is
anticipated that the contractor will collect a total of 100 families to
participate, and generate approximately 240,000 genotypes over the life
of the study. The contract will be for two years with a planned award
date on or before September 30, 1997. It is anticipated that this
project will require appoximately 15,600 man hours over the two years.

Responsible Source. Howard University is the only predominantly
African-American university to be designated a level-one research
university by Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. Thus through its
acedemic program of teaching, research, and service, Howard University
is uniquely capable of increasing the inclusion of minorities in
research study populations. Any other interested sources desiring
consideration for this requirement must fully identify their interests
