Barbara A. Shadrick, bs92y@nih.gov. The National Cancer Institute
(NCI), Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), Radiation
Epidemiology Branch (REB), intends to negotiate an add-on to the
above-referenced contract with the Radiation Effects Research
Foundation. This objective of this additional work is to study thyroid
hormone levels and thyroid disease among people exposed to I-131
during childhood. The exposed group shall include about 500 people who
were born and lived in Ozyorsk, Russia in 1952-1953, the period of
maximum radioactive releases from the Mayak nuclear weapons processing
plant opened in Chelyabinsk, Russia in 1948. A comparison group shall
include approximately 200 people who were born outside of Ozyorsk,
Russia, in 1952-1953, but moved to Ozyorsk between 1968-1990, a period
when the very minimal releases from Mayak had no practical effect on
the city population. Data collection will include clinical exams and
tests and medical record reviews. Serum levels of thyroxine,
triiodothyronine, thyrotropin, free thyroxine and antithyroperoxidase
antibodies (or anti-thyroid microsomal antibodies) will be assayed.
Authority for this action is 41 USC 253(c)(1), as set forth in FAR
6.302-1(a)(2)(ii). (See Numbered Note 22.) All responses to this notice
must be submitted in writing by mail, fax or e-mail. Collect calls will
not be accepted. (0135) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0011 19970520\A-0011.SOL)
