The Dahlgren Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center is soliciting proposals on a sole source/brand name only basis for a fixed price contract for the repair of a Traveling Wave Tube (TWT) Varian Model VTS-5754D2, serial number 452. This repair shall include replacing the input section and the electron gun, reprocessing and testing to verify complete repair in accordance with manufacturer's original specifications. A 12-month warranty will be included with this repair. These tubes are used constantly for testing at several naval facilities. Without the use of these units, lower powered, older model units are required to be transported from different sites to complete testing which is required, and the costs of those moves is hard on the equipment, plus it is not efficient, and effects the overall life expectancy of these types of equipment, due to wear and tesr on the units. Varian, the manufacturer, has been bought out by Communications and Power Industries (CPI) for these types of tubes, and theonly other company which had the capability for these tubes was Hughes. There are several other types of tubes on the market, however, their applicability and class do not lend their use in this type of environment. The only other company which could possibly perform a repair of this sort is outside the US and that specific company would require the original manufacturer's drawings/schematics to be able to look at the TWT's and determine how to repair them.
