Y -- HARRISBURG, PA AREA ITS EARLY ACTION PROJECTS PROGRAM POC Glenn Rowe -- (717) 783-3960 HARRISBURG AREA ITS EARLY ACTION PROJECTS PROGRAM As part of the Traffic and Incident Management System (TIMS) for the Harrisburg area, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Engineering District 8-0, will let a contract this summer to implement an advanced traveler information system (ATIS) to inform motorists about traffic, weather, construction and emergency conditions. The ATIS will consist of 18 variable message signs (VMS), two highway advisory radio systems (HAR), a portable traffic management system (PTMS) and system control. The VMS system includes the furnishing of ten (10) new VMSs to be integrated with eight (8) of the Department's existing VMSs, or alternatively, the furnishing of 18 new VMSs. The VMSs will be trailer-mounted, LED based technology, solar powered, or solar and hydrogen fuel cell hybrid powered, and equipped with wireless control and PC control software. The Department's existing highway advisory radio (HAR) units will be modified so that they are controllable by the system control computers and operated at the frequency requested by the Department. The PTMS unit will consist of video detection and traffic monitoring equipment, variable message sign, highway advisory radio, and communication equipment, all installed on a PTMS trailer or trailer-mounted tower.
