Contracts Office, Contract@nist.gov. The National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) has a requirement for shim safety rods
for the NIST research reactor. A general description of the shim
safety rods is as follows: 1 inch thick by 5 inches wide and have
active poison that is 52 1/4 inches long. The hollow interior is filled
with helium and sealed and the cadmium is clad on the outside and
inside surfaces with aluminum. The hub section of the rod is made of
aluminum plate. The 0.040-0.060 inch thick cadmium is in sheet form and
is 99.95% pure. Exact thickness of the cadmium will be established
prior to fabrication. A number of specifications from the American
Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) will be incorporated within the
resulting solicitation and contract: ASTM B-440, "Standard
Specification for Cadmium;" ASTM B-221, "Aluminum-Alloy Extruded Bars,
Rods, Shapes;" and ASTM B-209, "Aluminum-Alloy Sheet and Plate." The
general scope of these specifications can be found on the Internet at
"http://www.astm.org" (without quotes). Additional standards and NIST
drawings will be provided in the solicitation package along with
manufacturing procedures. Based upon market research, the Government is
not using the policies contained in Part 12, Acquisition of Commercial
Items, in its solicitation for the described supplies or services.
However, interested persons may identify to the contracting officer
their interest and capability to satisfy the Government's requirement
with a commercial item within 15 days of this notice. See Note 26. All
interested parties may request to be placed on the potential bidder's
