COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF MAY 29,1997 PSA#1855INTELLIGENT PROCESSING OF MATERIALS (IPM) WORKSHOP TO BE HELD JULY 23,
1997 A workshop on Intelligent Processing of Materials (IPM) Workshop
will be offered by Concurrent Technologies Corporation (CTC) on July
23, 1997, in Johnstown, PA. The workshop will be sponsored by the
National Center for Excellence in Metalworking Technology (NCEMT) as
part of its technology transition efforts. The NCEMT has been tasked by
the Navy Manufacturing Technology (MANTECH) Program to develop and
demonstrate the technology needed to produce long (up to 1km) HTS wires
and tapes. This workshop will demonstrate wire drawing process control
through the implementation of Intelligent Processing of Materials
(IPM) approach. This approach exploits current development in advanced
sensing, predictive process modeling and software control, including
artificial intelligence. IPM, as a process control strategy, integrates
computer models of manufacturing processes with advanced sensing of
product property and process variables. This results in reduced lead
time, improved quality, and increased productivity and competitiveness
of domestic materials processing. As part of this workshop,
Engineering Knowledge Bases (EKBs) will also be demonstrated. The
objective of developing the HTS/EKB is to capture and organize the
relevant data, information, and knowledge generated during
manufacturing technology development at the NCEMT. This EKB will be
integrated with the NCEMT Web Information Server in order to facilitate
technology transfer to the Navy, DOD, and the U.S. industrial base. A
nominal registration fee of $30.00 covers the cost of handouts,
continental breakfast, and lunch. To register for this workshop, or to
receive further information, contact Ms. Tricia Wright, Concurrent
Technologies Corporation, 1450 Scalp Ave., Johnstown, PA 15904, (814)
