Amendment 6 -- This synopsis is an additional topic to the Information
Science and Technology Directorate (IS&TD). This amendment will be
available on the ARL Home Page (http://w3.arl.mil/baa). TOPIC 1.11
ATMOSPHERIC REMOTE SOUNDING -- The ARL ISTD Battlefield Environment
Division is developing a system to measure and derive profiles of
atmospheric variables from mobile ground-based and satellite remote
sensors. In order to have a truly mobile system, current remote sensors
must be miniaturized as much as possible and innovative processing
software developed. Specific areas of interest include (but are not
limited to) wind profiling radars, ground-based radiometers, other
remote sensing instruments, and upgraded or new algorithms, software,
and hardware for small, highly capable, meteorological satellite
receivers and processors. The primary variables of interest include
profiles of wind speed and direction, temperature (sensible and
virtual), humidity, pressure, plus others such as liquid water content
and cloud base and top. Innovative, high-quality, and low-cost
solutions are encouraged to achieve the goal of increasing capability,
while reducing size and weight, of ground-based sensors and
meteorological satellite receivers and processors. Sensors may be
combined to take advantage of the strengths of each while reducing
their weaknesses. The development of innovative software is encouraged
for processing data from meteorological satellites and the
aforementioned ground-based sensors or combination of sensors. Cost
reduction may be achieved through the use of off-the-shelf hardware or
software modules and through the aforementioned innovative solutions.
