SUMMARY: The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Industrial Technologies (OIT) announces its interest in receiving applications for innovative research and development (R&D) in support of the Glass Industry Initiative to improve efficiencies of production, energy, environment and innovative types or uses of glass. This R&D will deal with improvements in the manufacture of glass in the U.S. focusing on four aspects of glass manufacturing, namely: production efficiency, energy efficiency, innovative types or uses of glass and environmental protection and recycling. The R&D also covers several specific subtopics supporting one or more of the four topical areas. DOE's Office of Industrial Technologies supports industry efforts to increase energy efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity. OIT's goal is to accelerate research, development, demonstration and commercialization of energy efficient, renewable and pollution-prevention technologies benefiting industry, the environment and U.S. energy security. The key objectives of this solicitation and the resulting projects are improvements of the competitive position of, and employment opportunities in, the U.S. glass industry. These objectives are intended to be achieved through several avenues, such as the development of improved technologies and better application of existing technologies. As a result of this solicitation, DOE expects to award three (3) to eight (8) cooperative agreements with an anticipated $2 million in total funding for FY 98. The total estimated funding over a five -year period is $5 million. The solicitation invites applications from any non-profit or for-profit organization, university or other institution of higher education or non-federal agency or entity. National laboratories are not eligible for awards as prime recipients. A minimum cost-sharing commitment of 20 percent of the total cost of the project in each of the Phases I and II will be required from non-federal sources for R&D projects. For demonstration or commercial application projects in Phase III, the cost sharing requirement from non-federal sources is a minimum of 50 percent. For Further Information Contact:.
