Patricia A. Hypes, phypes. U. S. Army ARDEC is seeking information and
potential sources to procure a limited quantity of off the shelf
non-developmental devices for test and evaluation. The U. S. Army has
a need for an infrared (IR) Illumination Hand Grenade (IIHG) for the
purpose of enhancing warfighter night vision equipment and night
operations. The IIHG shall be operable with existing night vision
devices and thermal weapon sights. The IIHG must further have the
following characteristics: provide effective intensity for IR
illumination while yielding zero or low observable output in the
visible light spectral region; be capable of being seen by individuals
wearing IR image intensified night vision devices to the range of 1100
to 2200 meters in the ground-to-ground role and 2000 to 5000 meters in
the air-to-ground role; have no detrimental operational effect on
night image intensi- fied devices or thermal sights; be initiated by a
grenade-type lever action fuze ignition system with a firing train
designed to prevent premature detonation if the delay train
malfunctions; be operationally capable in climatic conditions of -25 to
120 degrees F; be capable of storage in climatic conditions of -46 to
160 degrees F; have a reliability of .95 to .99 percent probability of
functioning; be compatible in size and mounting with Load and Bearing
Equipment (LBE) and current Load Bearing Equipment Vest; weigh no more
than 12 ounces (10ounce objective); have a burn time of a minimum of 30
seconds with a standard deviation of 0.5 seconds. Interested firms

capabilities of their candidate device in re- sponse to the
aforementioned criteria. Responses should be submitted through the U.S.

Picatinny Arsenal, NJ 07806-5000. This is a Market Survey, not a
pre-solicitation notice. If a formal solicitation is generated at a
later date, a solicitation notice will be published. Respondents should
submit their qualification data within 30 days from the date of this
publication. All infor- mation is to be submitted at no cost or
obligation to the Government. The Government reserves the right to
reject, in whole or in part any private sector input as a result of
