Contracts Office, Contract@nist.gov. The National Institute of
Standards and Technology (NIST) has a need for services to perform
applications in laser technology, as described below. (1) The
contractor shall do a study to evaluate the potential of
continuous-wave (cw) laser techniques to perform isotopically selective
trace analysis of long-lived radionuclides. The investigation will
concentrate on obtaining and evaluating spectroscopic data, identifying
suitable laser sources, and exploring methods of ionization and
detection. A report on the study performed shall be provided by the
contractor. (2) The contractor shall design, construct and assemble
components of an experiment to produce a Bose-Einstein condensate of
sodium. The apparatus shall include magnet coils, optical systems for
illumination and detection of the sodium atoms, thermal isolation
barriers and atomic beam forming devices. Design drawings shall be
provided by the contractor. (3) The contractor shall develop wavelength
metrology for an 842 nm cw laser accurate to better than 2 MHz by
comparison to known transition in suitable elements. The approach will
involve sub-Doppler excitations of reference lines and the
measurements of frequency intervals by Fabry-Perot interferometry and
laser heterodyning techniques. A report on wavelength metrology shall
be provided by the contractor. The Government anticipates award of a
firm fixed price contract. The period of performance for this
acquisition is from the date of contract award through December 30,
1997. The FOB point for deliverables is Destination, Gaithersburg, MD.
