final machine work on 2 each completely assembled rudders. Machine work
will be on the socket casting to conform with dimensions and tolerances
for all machined surfaces in accordance with reference A, detail 9-B.
At the discretion of the contractor there may be a relief cut required
at the lowest point of the keyway. The relief cut shall not exceed 1/8
inch beyond constant depth shown in detail 10-D. This relief is
required to allow metal chips to break away. This deviation is only
required if other than a milling process is used. Inspection and
acceptance shall be at the contractors facility for verification and
conformance. Additional information: A -- The AS cast diameter of the
taper is 1 1/2 inch smaller than the finished dimension. B -- The
bottom surface of the casting will be rough machined when received. C
-- The top and bottom surfaces may require a finish cut to achieve 5
foot 1/2 inch height and also be perpendicular to the centerline of the
fabricated rudder blades. D -- Allow plus/minus .015 inch for all
fractional dimension tolerances. E -- Transportation to and from
contractor's plant will be provided by USCG Yard truck. References: A.

2) Prior to final machining contractor shall weld to repair all leaks
in castings/rudder bodies in accordance with Ref. B. After final
machining and in the presence of the Coast Guard inspector the
contractor shall perform an air test at 05 PSI with 0 drop in pressure
for a duration of 10 minutes to completed rudder assemblied to prove
that the rudder have 0 leaks including any leaks in socket castings.
Note: All dimensional readings and tests are to be documented. Both
rudders have been airtested at 2 PSI and found to be leaking through
the hub casing. This notice constitutes a request for quotations under
Simplified Acquisition Procedures. No other solicitation will be
issued. Please submit all quotes via telefax or mail to Mr. Orofino.
