The Library of Congress has a requirement for an integrated library system (ILS) application software to support acquisitons, bibliographic control, inventory control, serials management, circulation, binding and preservation, public and staff searching of the Library's bibliographic records, access to other databases including digital repositories and databases of electronic text resources, as well as management statistics and reporting. The system is expected to replace existing stand-alone applications that currently support some of these functional areas. The system shall include all applications software, licenses, documentation, installation, training and maintenance support. TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT -- Proposed hardware/software configurations must be capable of operating over the Library's installed internet of local area networks, with Library standard configurations. This internet consists of local token ring segments interconnected through IP routers. The local rings are 802.5 compliant networks operating at 4 Mbps over unshielded twisted pair wiring. The standard communications protocol among all devices in the Library is TCP/IP. This protocol is currently supported on all installed servers and workstations. The Library supports standardized hardware/software configurations for each operating system. The Library requires all relevant hardware and software to be compliant with the requirements of the Federal Government's Energy Star and Year 2000 programs. Responsibility for the physical connection and maintenance of network connections (including the network interface card) belongs to the Library of Congress. CLIENT CONFIGURATION -- The standard client hardware configuration for Library users is expected to be Intel-based PC (Pentium at 166 Mhz or above). The standard client software configuration is expected to be Windows 95. On older Intel-based PC configurations, the Library supports the following operating systems: MS DOS, MS Windows 3.11, and OS/2. Each of these configurations operates with a specific version of TCP/IP, Banyan VINES client, WordPerfect, and Novell's Groupwise email client. SERVER CONFIGURATION -- The Library expects to build and support enterprise-wide server applications on the following platforms: IBM MVS and IBM AIX/UNIX. All applications will be run on designated shared Library production servers, and must be accessed via TCP/IP, using hardware and software products supported by the Library. Preferred environments for enterprise-wide or mission-critical applications is now IBM AIX/UNIX. Preferred SQL-based database environment is Oracle, with a preference for the Oracle WWW-based client.
