COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF JUNE 30,1997 PSA#1877A -- AWARD NOTICE FOR EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION OF MATERIAL
FLAMMABILITY IN SPACE AWARD NOTICE The NASA Lewis Research Center
intends to award a two-year contract to Keldysh Research Center in
Moscow, Russia. Keldysh Research Center sets itself apart from the
other possible sources in that they have developed a unique facility,
Skorost, for performing tests of material samples for flammability in
microgravity. This facility is located on the orbiting Space Station
Mir. The effort is described below: Experimental Verification of
Material Flammability in Space The NASA Lewis Research Center intends
to measure the flammability and flame-spread rate of selected
spacecraft construction materials in sheet form in microgravity, using
a test apparatus accommodated on the Orbital Station Mir. Six or more
different materials will be ignited at varying air-flow velocities
corresponding to spacecraft ventilation rates. Preliminary tests in a
duplicate apparatus on the ground will furnish reference values of
flammability and flame-spread rate for comparison to the space
measurements. The materials will be furnished by the NASA Johnson Space
Center White Sands Test Facility, which will also conduct additional
heat-release and standard flammability tests to characterize the
materials. The technical and programmatic points of contact are Robert
Friedman (216)433-5697 and Marton Forkosh (216) 433-8791. The
Contractual points of contact are Christopher Signorino (216) 433-2767
and Ernest Mensurati (216) 433-2727. WEB: Click here for the latest
