Army Engineer (USAE) Waterways Experiment Station (WES) proposes to award a contract to Precision Acoustic Systems (PAS), Seattle, WA, under the authority of 10 U. S. C. 2304 (c) (1) for a split-beam passive ultrasonic tracking system (UTS). This UTS must be totally compatible with the existing WES and Portland District Precision Acoustic Systems split-beam and single-beam hydroacoustic data acquisition equipment. This existing PAS hydroacoustic equipment includes not only those system components used to acquire data but other system components used to process and analyze hydroacoustic data. PAS is the only vendor of standard production multi-mode split-beam instrumentation that is totally compatible with existing USAE active split-beam instrumentation and data acquisition and processing software. The use of standard production instrumentation is essential to control costs as well as to control the risk of project failure which is increased with the use of prototype instrumentation. A split-beam passive UTS is required to provide an adequate tracking baseline for a parabolic tracking system within the confines of a hydroturbine intake.
