Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health are soliciting
proposals from accredited institutions of higher education to continue
developing and implementing a summer, residential "Science Enrichment
Program" for incoming tenth-grade students selected from
under-represented minority and underserved populations. The programs
would be initiated in the summer of 1998 and continue through the year
2002. The duration of each summer program will be for a period of five
to six weeks. The two major goals of this program are to: (1) Encourage
under-represented minority and underserved students to select careers

students' science, research, and sociocultural backgrounds. The three
major objectives through which these goals are to be met are: (1)
Provide opportunities for students to have "direct" experiences in the
fields of science, mathematics, and laboratory research as a result of
"hands-on" experience using resources that extend far beyond the usual
high school classroom instruction; (2) Provide students with an
"I-can-do-it" feeling regarding their abilities in the sciences, and;
(3) Contribute to the advancement of a strong core of future
researchers. Each offeror shall have adequate on-campus dormitory
accommodations for gender specific housing, classroom space, laboratory
facilities that are appropriately equipped for biomedical-type
experimental procedures, dining and recreational facilities, and other
resources required for the safety and security of program
participants. Two sites will be selected from this solicitation. There
will be approximately fifty students at each site. Mandatory Criteria:
