(617) 495-7376, FAX (617) 496-7692 The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) requires the fabrication and delivery of four (4) optical mounts used in a spectrograph at the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Three of the mounts include a cylindrical support bezel 16 to 25 inches in diameter, 4 to 6 inches deep and 0.5 to 0.75 inches thick. The fourth mount includes a rectangular bezel that is 14 inches square by 2.5 inches deep made from 0.3 inch steel plate. Each bezel is connected to a 15 to 20 inch square base assembly. The structures are bolted and pinned together from 0.25 to 0.75 inch thick steel plates. The majority of the components are steel although some parts are Invar and titanium. A few precision alignment surfaces require +/- 0.001 inch dimensional tolerances. Each of the completed mounts weighs between 350 to 530 lbs.
