MEXICO: EMERGENCY MEXICAN OFFICIAL STANDARD NOM-EM-005-SCFI-1997, DETERMINATION, ALLOCATION AND FIXING OF VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS -- SPECIFICATIONS The following notification is being circulated in accordance with Article 10.6. Title, number of pages and language(s) of the notified document: Emergency Mexican Official Standard NOM-EM-005-SCFI-1997, Determination, Allocation and Fixing of Vehicle Identification Numbers -- Specifications (11 pages). 6. Description of content: This Emergency Mexican Official Standard lays down the specifications for determining, allocating and fixing the NIV (Vehicle Identification Number) on the vehicles described in paragraph 2.5 (buses, automobiles, commercial lorries, light lorries, medium lorries, heavy lorries, motorcycles, trailers, semi-trailers, road tractors, unfinished vehicles) of this Standard. This Emergency Mexican Official Standard adopts international provisions and mechanisms on vehicle identification with the aim of establishing a vehicle identification number that shows the identity of vehicles manufactured, assembled or imported in Mexico. This will help to resolve problems related to the lack of vehicle controls, for example, unlawful imports and robbery, and will provide security for commercial transactions and thus give individuals and the public sector a means of identifying with certainty the vehicle that is the subject of the transaction. 7.
