39 -- OMNI-SCAN TUNNEL DUE 082997 POC Contracting Officer, Franklin Miles, 703.280.7812 -- Contact Point, Tammi Robinson, FAX 703.280.8412 The United States Postal Service is seeking existing equipment, herein called an Omni-Scan Tunnel. This equipment will read bar coded symbols (BCS) that have been placed on packages, USPS Trays and Tubs, and other USPS customer mailed products. The BCS can appear on any surface of a product, including the bottom. The USPS tray and tub BCS appears at specific locations on these products. The Omni-Scan Tunnel is to be used in USPS high speed sorting systems, e.g., Large Package Sorting System (LPSS), Singulate and Scan Induction Unit (SSIU). Interested parties should contact USPS Purchasing and Materials, 8403 Lee Highway, Merrifield, Virginia 22082. We are planning on having four phases for this project. The first phase is a request for information by way of this announcement, the second is a review of equipment at the vendor's facility followed by a selection for the third phase, which is a test of Omni-Scan Tunnels in the USPS Engineering test bed at Merrifield, Virginia. In the fourth phase, successful Omni-Scan Tunnels will then be tested at one of our Bulk Mail Centers (BMC) under live mail processing conditions (BMC location to be determined). The USPS does not guarantee that Omni-Scan Tunnels will be purchased as part of this project or any national program.
