COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 1,1997 PSA#1900EXTENDED RANGE MUNITION INDUSTRY DAY The U.S. Army TACOM Armament
Research Development and Engineering Center formally invites all
interested parties to attend an Industry Day for the 120mm Extended
Range Munition (ERM) on August 27, 1997, from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM, in
the Command Conference Center, Building 1, Picatinny Arsenal, New
Jersey. This munition system would enable an Abrams tank, with its
120mm gun, to engage with precision an array of high value enemy
targets (i.e., tanks, armored personnel carries, reconnaissance and
battle command vehicles) beyond 8km, at both line of sight and non-line
of sight. A general description of the ERM is as follows: The tank crew
(or tank fire control) would self acquire a target or receive target
location data. It is envisioned that the projectile could receive
target location information prior to being fired while it is in the gun
tube. Prior to launch, the fire control would aim the gun at the
appropriate point in space. After launch, the projectile could maneuver
in the general direction of the target and seek/sense the target at a
range of 500 to 5000 meters from the target, either autonomously and/or
aided by a designation system on the tank or by a forward observer.
Additional requirements include the ability to defeat active protection
systems, fit within the tank's ammo stowage rack, meet the interface
control document for 120mm ammunition and be safe to store, handle and
fire within the standard operational and storage limits. The draft
agenda topics for discussion include ERM Background, ERM Operational
Requirements, ERM Employment Concept and Concept Evaluation, FORCE XXII
Armor Battalion Force Redesign Analysis, ERM Acquisition Strategy,
Results of Government Studies and Analyses, Active Protection Systems
