SOL WASC7-1631 DUE 081497 POC Randall Brown, (voice) 206-526-6226/FAX 206-526-6025 WASC-7-1631 National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML)is seeking a Biologist to perform the following tasks to: Take primary responsibility for field studies of harbor seal predation on cutthroat trout in the Umpqua River. The contractor will be staying in Oregon for 2.5 to 3 months beginning 09/01/97. The contractor will collect scat samples bi-monthly, screen the materials to recover identifiable prey remains, conduct weekly censuses of harbor seals in the Umpqua River to assess the average number of animals present on a monthly basis. 1)The primary goal is to estimate the biomass of fish and invertebrates consumed by harbor seals in the river and what portion of that prey consumption is made up of cutthroat trout and other salmonids. The contractor will conduct small boat surveys of the lower 25 miles of the Umpqua River to assess the distribution of harbor seals in the river and identify areas where seals prey on salmonids. 2)The contractor will also work with the field research teams from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW)in observational studies of predation and boat surveys of the Alsae River to assess distribution of seals in the river. 3)The contractor will submit monthly reports on results of harbor seal census activity, food habits collections and observation. 4)The contractor will submit a report summarizing frequency of occurrence and numerical occurrence of prey in harbor seal on a monthly basis.
