The Government intends to authorize its contractor for the Reusable Solid Rocket Motors, Thiokol Corporation, to initiate procurement of 46,000 pounds of carbon fiber. The present subcontractor has announced plans to cease production of this critical material used in the manufacture of the Reusable Solid Rocket Motors. This procurement will allow the prime contractor to stockpile carbon fiber in sufficient quantities to meet Reusable Solid Rocket Motor requirements through program completion. Production drawings and specifications are not available to describe the required material. See Note 22. (0217)
