COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 7,1997 PSA#1904WORKSHOP(SEE BELOW) WORKSHOP ON USING RECHARGEABLE
COMMUNICATIONS-ELECTRONICS BATTERIES IN THE FIELD CO-SPONSORED BY THE
CECOM POWER SOURCES CENTER OF EXCELLENCE AND THE DEFENSE LOGISTICS
AGENCY 10 -- 11 SEPTEMBER 1997 FORT MONMOUTH, NEW JERSEY. The use of
rechargeable batteries as an alternate to the traditional
non-rechargeable, or primary battery, is rapidly increasing. This
change is being driven by the GEN. Reimer's, Chief of Staff of the
Army, directive to reduce the Army's battery related operating and
support costs. The ability to implement this directive is based on the
current state of the art rechargeable battery being lighter and
lasting longer than previous generations. Besides fielding the new
generation of state of the art rechargeable batteries and battery
chargers, the Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) is continuing
looking for methods to reduce battery usage costs. We at the CECOM
Power Sources Center of Excellence and the Defense Logistics Agency
realize that the philosophy, doctrine, and logistics associated with
using rechargeable batteries is not fully mature. CECOM and DLA are
committed to developing the tools to assist the user in obtaining the
maximum effective use of rechargeable batteries. On 8 -- 9 September a
separate meeting will be held for Government only personnel. The goal
of this meeting will be to identify the specific wants and needs of
the user. This workshop will bring representatives of the user,
developer, logistics and R&D communities together with industry. The
objective of the workshop is to present to industry the major issues,
concerns and desires of the Government as they pertain to the use of
rechargeable batteries. The workshop's output is to develop a plan of
action for the military's use of rechargeable batteries and other
reusable power sources. This workshop gives all of the participants the
opportunity to have input into this process and plan its implementation
through teaming. Your participation in this workshop is considered
essential to its success. The unique knowledge you bring to this
workshop is invaluable to assisting CECOM and DLA develop the most
effective solutions. The results of the workshop will be presented to
the upper management at CECOM for their approval. This workshop is not
an Advanced Planning Briefing to Industry, and will not discuss any
potential future contracts. It's main purpose is to address the
technical issues facing the implementation of rechargeable batteries by
the field and to develop corrective actions. If interested please fax
