R -- MULTIMEDIA EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ON DEPRESSION SOL RFQ 618-40-98-LK DUE 091997 POC Linda Kelly 612-725-2183 The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Medical Education Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota, has a requirement to develop, design and produce a multimedia educational program on depression. The program will be targeted to patients and their families and will answer their frequently asked questions about this disorder. A multimedia approach will be used. The program is intended to run on Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 with a PC (minimum 486) at 33mhz, 8MB of RAM, 256 colors, a double speed CD-ROM player, and audio. The following components will be included: (1) Introduction to depression and how to use the program. (2) Selection of a guide that will assist users through aspects of the program. (3) Menu of areas for which questions have been identified. Input into the development of this project will come from VA and non-VA experts on depression. An alpha version will be developed for internal review and a beta version of the disc will be tested using a group of representative patients and families. At the end of the program the user will be able to: (1) Recognize the symptoms of depression; (2) Identify the causes of depression; (3) Describe major treatments for depression; (4) distinguish health provider roles in the care of patients with this disorder, (5) Select strategies for day-to-day coping with depression, and (6) Identify roll of family and caregivers.
