Jerry Williams, jerry.williams@msfc.nasa.gov. In order that potential
sources may offer comments and information on boat and shipbuilding
methods; the following is a Request for Information (RFI).
INTRODUCTION: NASA is currently studying heavy lift launch vehicle
concepts for NASA's exploration missions (e.g., Mars Missions). These
missions require a vehicle capable of placing payloads of about 175,000
lb., 28 feet diameter x 100 feet long, into earth orbit. NASA's
Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) is supporting this activity by
developing and analyzing large launch vehicle concepts. To support this
effort, MSFC will be working with industry to gather and analyze
pertinent information. NASA's intent is to develop a data base
supporting low cost heavy lift access to space. REQUESTED INFORMATION:
MSFC is seeking information on boat and shipbuilding methods for
construction of cylindrical propellant tanks, stiffened cylinders,
thrust structure, attractive technology and processes, etc., which
might lead to such cost reductions. Vehicle elements under
consideration could be as long as 150 feet and up to 28 feet in
diameter. In response to this RFI, please contact Bob Armstrong at
205/544-1863 (bob.armstrong@msfc.nasa.gov), or Gary Johnson at
205/544-0636 (gary.johnson@msfc.nasa.gov). Information should be
submitted to Bob Armstrong via electronic mail on/or before August 18,
1997. It is MSFC's preference that proprietary or company private
information not be provided in your response to this RFI. If such
information is provided, it should be clearly marked along with any
restrictions on its use. This synopsis is for information and planning
purposes and is not to be construed as a commitment by the Government,
nor will the Government pay for the information solicited. Respondents
will not be notified of the results of the review. Any questions
regarding this announcement should be directed to the identified point
of contact. Comments shall be received no later than September 12,
1997. In responding reference GP56-Q-RFI-1. The solicitation and any
documents related to this procurement are available over the Internet.
These documents are in ASCII or RTF format and will reside on a
