MASC Acquisition Management, Doris.P.Turner@noaa.gov. The National
Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires a continuation of
services for a project to trap and sympathetically cool positrons in a
Penning trap by laser-cooled Be+ ions. Tasks are to include the
following. 1. Finalize the calculation of the efficiency of positron
trapping. In particular the effects of the energy spread of the
moderated positrons and the density of the laser-cooled Be+ ions of the
efficiency should be determined. 2. Design, construction, and
installation of shielding about the magnet to insure radiation from the
positron source is at an acceptable level. 3. Design and installation
of the positron source, including a modulator for this source. 4.
Determination of the trapping efficiency of positrons and effectiveness
of sympathetic cooling. Interested sources proposing to supply an
equivalent unit must submit pricing with a written qualification
statement clearly establishing capability to meet the above
requirements within 15 days from the date of this synopsis. The
qualifications statements will be used to determine the need for
competitive bids. In the absence of other qualified sources, it is the
