COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 22,1997 PSA#1915U.S. Army Research Office, AMXRO-PR, P.O. Box 12211, Research Triangle
Park, NC 27709-2211 R -- SOURCES SOUGHT" FOR TECHNICAL AND MANAGEMENT SUPPORT SERVICES TO
CONDUCT THE ARMY RESEARCH OFFICE PROGRAM ENTITLED "UNINITIATES'
INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING (UNITE)" POC Technical -- Dr. George A.
Neece, (919) 549-4204; Contracting Officer -- Hodges T. Throckmorton,
(919) 549-4264. The US Army Research Office (ARO) seeks sources that
are qualified to provide technical and management support services
needed for a planned continuation award (three to five year contract or
grant) to coordinate, administer and evaluate the ARO program entitled
"Uninitiates' Introduction to Engineering (UNITE)". This will be a
continuation award and will be made during late calendar year 1997. The
UNITE program is a college preparation program designed for high school
students to attend classes during the summer months. The program is
composed of five universities and each university (California State
University, Long Beach, CA (AISES program); University of Delaware,
Newark, DE; University of Detroit, Detroit, MI; University of New
Mexico, Albuquerque, NM (MESA program) and Florida International
University, Miami, FL) operates an educational program that encourages
and assists socially and economically disadvantaged high school
students by preparing them to enter and graduate from colleges and
universities. Each university program is designed for students living
within the general local area rather than to support students
regardless of area location. The US Army currently provides financial
support through an organization (grantee) that coordinates and
administers the UNITE program with the participant universities. Each
university identifies academically talented high school students who
show an aptitude for math and science subjects. By attending college
structured classes during the summer, these students are introduced to
ways that math and science are applied to real world situations and
how math and science are related to careers in engineering and
technology. Annually, each university receives an equal amount of funds
to support the students during the summer months. The contractor or
grantee for the forthcoming program will coordinate all funding and
administrative support actions with the five universities and receive
reports of accomplishments. Each year the contractor or grantee will be
required to provide a final report of accomplishments to the
Government's designated project manager. Any organization that is
qualified and interested in performing this UNITE effort for the next
three to five years should provide two copies of their organization's
capability statement and relevant experience by 29 August 1997 to the
Contracting Officer at the following address: U.S. Army Research
Office, Attn: Hodges T. Throckmorton, Contracting Officer, P.O. Box
12211, Research Triangle Park, North Carolina 27709-2211. Once the
submitted information is evaluated for capability, the ARO intends to
issue to the qualified sources a formal project solicitation that will
describe the acquisition in its entirety. (0232) Loren Data Corp. http://www.ld.com (SYN# 0121 19970822\R-0025.SOL)
