COMMERCE BUSINESS DAILY ISSUE OF AUGUST 26,1997 PSA#1917B -- COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH PROGRAM WITH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
HAVING SIGNIFICANT MINORITY GRADUATE ENROLLMENT Point of Contact --
Ramona Simpson, Outreach Coordinator, 217/333-1370 B -- Program
Description: The Materials Science Collaborative Research Program
(MSCRP) sponsored by the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory
(FSMRL) at the University of Illinois was established to forge links
with Educational Institutions which emphasize minority education in the
sciences and engineering, while supporting the graduate research
programs of minority students. The emphasis of this program will be
placed on graduate students whose thesis research programs can make
effective use of the resources of the FSMRL to enhance their education
at their home institutions. This MSCRP program is designed to foster
research collaborations between faculty at the participating
universities and at the FSMRL. Support for short term visits by faculty
from FSMRL to the participating university and for faculty from the
participating university to the FSMRL will be made available. Coupled
with these visits, we will invitegraduate students working with these
faculty members to carry out a part of their thesis research using the
facilities of the FSMRL to pursue their thesis research in cooperation
with FSMRL research projects. The MSCRP provides an opportunity for
faculty and graduate students to be involved in research using state of
the art research instruments. A goal of the program is to provide an
enriching research experience that will encourage the students to
continue their careers in materials research. A brochure briefly
describing the research activities of the FSMRL is available upon
request. Access to these facilities and education in their use will be
available during the student's visit to the FSMRL. Each graduate
student chosen for this program will join an ongoing FSMRL research
activity selected by his thesis advisor at his home institution. The
research carried out at the FSMRL could be used for the student's
thesis. Each graduate student chosen for this program will receive a
stipend of $250 per weekfor the 8 10 weeks of the program. Expenses for
travel between the home University and the University of Illinois, up
to $600, will be paid. The costs of carrying out the research at the
FSMRL will be paid by the FSMRL. The visits can be made at any time of
the year as arranged between the participating university and FSMRL
faculty. C -- Application Procedure: Since this program is focused on
enhancing interactions between faculty and improving the graduate
research experience of students, the student's thesis advisor should
arrange for interactions with FSMRL research groups. Activities of
these groups are described in the accompanying material and contacts
can be facilitated by Ramona Simpson. Faculty members interested in
developing these interactions should contact a suitable faculty partner
in the FSMRL to initiate the exchange of faculty visits and/or student
visits. The prospective student participant should then send an
application letter which should specify his/her thesis advisor,
graduatethesis topic, which FSMRL research group he/she would be
interested in joining, a statement of what the student would like to
accomplish during the time at the FSMRL, and any other relevant
information. A letter of support from the student's thesis advisor
should accompany the application. Since one of the aims of this program
is to develop continuing interactions between the FSMRL and Educational
Institutions which emphasize minority education and to enhance the
quality of research experience received by minority graduate students,
preference will be given to minority graduate students studying
materials physics, materials chemistry, materials science and other
related fields. Applications will be processed as received.
