Winters, dw19z@nih.gov. The National Institute on Deafness and Other
Communication Disorders, National Institutes of Health, is recompeting
an ongoing project which is currently being performed by Huntington
Medical Research Institutes, under Contract No. N01-DC-5-2105. The
requirement will study the feasibility of an auditory prosthesis for
the deaf based on stimulating microelectrodes placed into the ventral
cochlear nucleus. The research will include both animal and human
studies. The ultimate goal is an auditory prosth esis for deaf
individuals who cannot benefit from a cochlear implant. It is
anticipated that a cost reimbursement, term type contract will be
awarded for a three year period. The solicitation is scheduled to be
issued on or about September 15, 1997. Proposals will be due 60 days
after the date of issuance of the solicitation. All responsible sources
may submit a proposal which will be considered by the Government. THE
SOLICITATION WILL BE AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY ONLY. It will be
