Robert Schiffer, robert.schiffer@hq.nasa.gov. The National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) announces the release of the
Announcement of Opportunity for NASA s Total Solar Irradiance Mission
(TSIM). The purpose of the announcement is to solicit a TSIM Principal
Investigator and Mission Team. The TSIM will be part of NASA s
contribution to the joint NASA-CSA SciSat Mission. SciSat will consist
of two small science satellites, one from each agency, launched
together in December 2001. The TSIM objectives are to continue the
precise, time-series measurement of the Total Solar Irradiance and,
optionally, provide two spectral irradiance measurements (200-300nm and
1500nm) required by the National Polar-orbiting Operational
Environmental Satellite System (NPOESS). Utilizing the new MTPE
PI-Model for mission management, the TSIM team selected will be
responsible for conducting the end-to-end mission including design and
development of the TSIM instruments, acquisition of a TSIM spacecraft,
development of scientific algorithms to be used to produce geophysical
parameters from the TSIM data stream, command and control of the TSIM
spacecraft for five years, and the production, preservation, and
distribution to the general public of all TSIM science data products.
