58 -- REQUEST FOR COMMENT ON CVR SALIENTS DUE 101097 POC For copy, contact the info office indicated., For additional information contact Pullen.0kd/Pklca/[916]643-6949 This is a request for industry comments on a set of salient characteristics that was developed in contemplation of a competitive buy of Cockpit Voice Recorders for use in the C-17 and other aircraft. The Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) system shall include the CVR assembly (recorder and memory storage unit), Microphones, Control Unit, Mating Connectors, Installation Hardware, and any other CVR system articles needed to establish a complete functionally operating CVR system installation on an aircraft. The CVR system must meet the following salient characteristics: 1) Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) certification letter for make and model being proposed showing compliance with Technical Standard Order (TSO) C123a, 02 Aug 96. 2) A minimum of two (2) hours audio storage capability. 3) A method to extract stored audio data from the front panel of the CVR assembly without disassembly of the unit. 4) A "Users Operation and Maintenance Manual" per TM 86-01 [This TM is being developed based on using commercial manuals.] 5) Copies of all data referenced in TSO C123a para (d) must be supplied with each unit. 6) An automatic shutoff capability to prevent recording over previously recorded data of the same accident.
